Does the SEC have a dynasty?

July 17, 2011 9:06 am

The South Eastern Conference has won the last five BCS National Championships in a row and four different teams have won the last four in a row. Since the BCS Era began, the SEC is the only conference undefeated in the Championship Game with a record of 7-0. It also has the most championships and the most teams with championships. The conference with the second most national championships is the Big 12 with 2 wins and 5 losses. The other four conferences are each 1-2 in the National Championship Game.

Dynasties are typically defined by teams that dominate their sport. In college football, a dynasty can be a team that either dominates their conference or dominates on the National Stage. This team has won multiple national or conference championships either in a row or in a short period. Since the SEC is not a "team" and hence cannot dominate its conference, it has as a unit dominated the national scene in the BCS ERA. Does the SEC have a dynasty?

That's an interesting question.  Though a dynasty is usually associated with a team and not a conference, one could make the arguement that the SEC as a whole could be considered a dynasty.  I think that the SEC has too many good teams for any one team to have a dynasty.  The SEC is the one conference that has that.  Most, if not all of the other conferences have one or two good teams and the rest are fillers.  It's especially evident now with most of the SEC teams being contenders.  I think that's what makes SEC football so exciting.  It also makes it more of a feat for an SEC team to go undefeated.  That's why an undefeated SEC team gets more consideration for a NC bid that another conference team that is undefeated.  That also holds true for BCS Bowl games.  The SEC is a dominant conference and has been for several years.  I think that the SEC will continue that dominance into the future.  So yes, I think that the SEC has a confenrence dynasty going.
